About Jessica
Jessica grew up in Savannah, GA, but moved to Clearwater, FL in 2011 with her husband and 2 daughters for her job with CCS Medical. In 2014, a former co-worker at CCS approached her about a position with a compounding pharmacy business he was starting. Jessica had no prior experience with pharmacy, but was offered the position of running the call center based in Clearwater. She accepted the job and excelled in her position. Jessica is a Type I diabetic and has a bachelor’s degree in Health Science. She was passionate about helping others in the healthcare field.
In the summer of 2016, the FBI raided the Clearwater Call Center and Jessica was shocked and upset to learn that the owners of the company were committing healthcare fraud on an extremely large scale. Jessica immediately began assisting the FBI in their investigation, helping them with whatever they asked. She even allowed them to “mirror” her phone so they could look at text messages because she had nothing to hide. Jessica was more than cooperative and even went to Alabama at her own expense to educate the FBI on their procedures and how the system worked. Never once did they tell her that anything she personally did was wrong, or what she should have done instead.
After being fully cooperative with the federal investigators for years, they decided to indict her, along with more than 25 other employees of Global Pharmacy. Many of those people were innocent like Jessica but were threatened and bullied into signing a plea deal. Jessica, however refused to sign it, even though the investigators threatened to add additional charges and told her she’d go to jail for a long time if she did not sign the plea deal. Jessica is very strong in her faith, so she could not in good conscience sign a false statement that she “willingly and knowingly” committed healthcare fraud. Her entire family had to pitch in by refinancing their home, cash out retirement, and empty their savings accounts in order to pay for a good federal attorney. The first public defender Jessica assigned quit, and the second one had never dealt with this type of case before, so it was imperative that we obtained professional help. It wasn’t until much later that we learned how difficult it is to beat the government. Even with the experienced attorney and no proof of intent on Jessica’s part to defraud, they charged her with 24 counts of conspiracy and healthcare fraud, and she was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
At the time, Jessica was the main breadwinner of her family, and her absence has now left her family in financial turmoil. Her husband will now be left to support their 9-year-old daughter as a single dad. Jessica’s faith was clearly evident and life-changing to those who witnessed her go through this 6-year ordeal. She has been called a “modern day Paul” by some and looked at as an inspiration by others who have heard her story. While Jessica is remaining strong and trying to look at her time in prison as an opportunity to share her faith, her family is devastated and is determined to do whatever it takes to reveal this injustice to the world and work to somehow get her case overturned.
